In the 18th century, the Persian Qizilbash warrior-administator class settled in this neighborhood of Kabul. As the most powerful corporate body in the city, they went through painstaking lengths to protect their houses behind labyrinthine fortifications, some of which have been restored in the last several years. In the heart of the Muradkhani is a shrine attributed to Hazrat Abu'l Fazl Abbas, the son of Imam Ali martyred at Karbala. (He is, incidentally, also believed to be buried at Karbala in Iraq).
